Food Estate Strategy a Form of Concern for Indonesia's Agrarian Crisis

Sunday, (22/05) The Student Press Organization (LPM) Kontur, Faculty of Engineering, University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta held a joint film with the theme "Looking at Agrarian Reform in the Student’s View". The film is the fourth film series from “Demi 1%” which is the result of collaboration with Greenpeace Indonesia. This film also discusses the Job Creation Law that occurs in the Indonesian agricultural industry.


This film tells how the chaos of the food estate industry in Indonesia and the inequality of government policies with the reality that occurs in the community regarding efforts to develop and solve problems related to food and agrarian affairs that are considered to have a negative impact on the environment, indigenous peoples, and farmers. This film also explains the policies that have been pursued by the Indonesian government in the field of agriculture since the new orde period, including peatland agricultural food estate policies (PLG), Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE), Ketapang, Balungan, and Central Kalimantan food estates.


The existence of the agrarian policy actually causes various environmental and community problems, including deforestation, natural disasters, to the emergence of conflicts between the government and indigenous peoples of the region that is targeted for development. Other impacts can also be seen from the results of the food industry which has decreased in quality due to the inappropriate application of development and also price increases due to the scarcity of quality product results. At the end of the event, the Student Press Institute (LPM) Kontur also held a discussion forum as a means of exchanging ideas and improving students' critical thinking to response this issue.
