Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS) began to implement a new program for graduate without thesis. This program refers to the Decree of the Chancellor of UMS No. 155/II/2017 about the guidance of the final project/thesis, the Regulation of Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia (Permenristekdikti) No. 20 of 2018 concerning Research and the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia (Permendikbud) No. 3 of 2020 concerning National Higher Education Standards.

UMS Vice-Chancellor II, Academic Affairs Prof., Dr., Harun Joko Prayitno said that, there were two things behind the implementation of this graduate without thesis program, first; UMS received the main award as the winner of the 2021 Independent Campus Learning Program (MBKM) which means that UMS already has more experience in this regard, secondly; the government has just issued the Indonesian Innovation Talent Program, which is a funding program in the form of incentives Rp3.000.000 for thesis and Rp20.000.000 for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

The requirements to be able to participate in this program are required to do and compile a final project (TA) in the form of scientific writing (KTI), with outcome based education in the form of; scientific publication articles, IPR (Intellectual Property Right), textbooks, book chapters, appropriate technology, or technological/social engineering.

"So what is meant by passing without a thesis is actually graduating without a thesis with the publication of international reputation, the thesis is skipped and directly publish with international reputation without an exam," said Prof., Dr., Harun Joko Prayitno when we interviewed (10/8).

Prof., Dr., Harun Joko Prayitno also said that there was a plan to provide a budget Rp3.000.000 for each person who participated in this program, but that budget would not be cashable but instead used to finance publishers in the amount Rp1.500.000 and for a rubric in the amount Rp1.500,000.

At the beginning of implementation, this graduate without thesis program targeted 500 students, where later the names of graduates from this program will be declared directly by the Chancellor and will be validated by one of the representatives from the Ministry of Education.

Various responses emerged from students and lecturers, Ulinnuha Trisiana, one of the students from the informatics department, welcomed this program with open arms, "yes it will definitely make us really ready, especially if we can pass the thesis. But I also still don't know, who really benefits from this program" she said.

There are also various responses from lecturer, "progressive lecturers, who like research and innovation strongly agree with this program, but lecturers who may not have researched or published articles for a long time will be less than happy with this program" replied Prof., Dr., Harun Joko Prayitno when we asked how the lecturers responded regarding this program.

With this graduation without thesis program Prof., Dr., Harun Joko Prayitno hoped for four things; the first is an increase in the time level of graduates quantitatively, second, an increase in student innovation talent because it has a publication focus, third, an increase in the potency of reputable publications that are internationally recognized, and fourth, providing opportunities for students to have international reputable publication experience that can later be used as a baseline for self-development.
