Surakarta (01/04/22) – The Aliansi Selamatkan Pangan initiated by Sebelas Maret University held an action in front of the DPRD (Regional People’s Representative Assembly) of Surakarta City regarding the high cost of cooking oil and the availability of cooking oil which is currently scarce. The action was held on April 1, 2022, attended around 150 participants from UNS students, students from Tunas Pembangunan University and friends who are members of the Indonesian Agriculture BEM Association.

One of the spokesmen for the action, Khanif Irsyad Fahmi, a student from the Agricultural Communication Extension study program, explained that this action was supported by surveys conducted in various areas in Solo, a week before this action was carried out.

"The survey is in Mojosongo, Balapan, Legi Market, Gede Market, and in several locations, for example in stalls, grocery stores, there are also food vendors who use cooking oil, said Fahmi."

Many sellers also complained about why until now students have not taken an action and the government was still silent about the rising price of cooking oil.

“Our focus is indeed on Solo because we found the fact in Solo that the price of oil has gone up, the price of all fried foods also (Rp2000/3, even in some places 1 bean costs Rp1000), this is a direct impact that is felt by students. For others, for example, some commodities such as fried foods or food are reduced in size, or some of them were not sold because they have difficulty getting oil, that's what we encountered in the field, added Fahmy."

Although the action which was originally scheduled for 12.45 WIB was delayed until 14.30 WIB, finally the action went smoothly and in an orderly manner.

The action began with singing the student march entitled “Totalitas Perjuangan”, then it continued with speeches, delivering of demands, signing of demands from the students and the Surakarta City DPRD, and the last one was documentation.

The demands consist of 4 points, namely: 1) urging the local government of Surakarta City to immediately stabilize affordable cooking oil prices for the community and demand to immediately overcome the scarcity of cooking oil in Surakarta City; 2) demanding the local government of Surakarta City to take firm action against the perpetrators of monopolistic practices and price games behind the scarcity of cooking oil commodities within the scope of the Surakarta area; 3) ask the local government of Surakarta City to maintain price stability and basic food stocks with a coverage area of Surakarta; 4) requesting the Surakarta City government to immediately coordinate with the Central Java provincial government and the central government regarding price stability and the availability of cooking oil stocks and other basic commodities.

The action was also attended by representatives of all factions of the Surakarta City DPRD, those are Democratic Party, PDIP, Golkar, PSI, PAN, Gerindra and PKS.

Sugeng Riyanto as Deputy Chairman of the Surakarta City DPRD said that they accepted all the demands made with pleasure.

“As requested by the younger students, we can receive all the points without exception. We will be happy to sign, said him."

He also welcomed the new pattern of student demonstrations. He revealed that this was the first time he had a student demonstration with a clearly written concept.”

"This means that fellow students even though they don't have the capital and power, they have concepts and conscience," he added.

However, the Aliansi Selamatkan Pangan will continue to oversee the case in the field for at least the next two weeks. Then if within that period the problem has not been followed up and has not been resolved, the further action will be carried out, whether it is taking to the streets again with more mass or meeting the Surakarta City DPRD directly.
